He Will Forever Be Missed
This site was created in memory of our Leopold Marthinus Theron. Our loving friend, father, brother and grandfather.
Born in Parow - Western Cape
MAY 7th, 1953
Leopold Marthinus Theron was born on 7 May 1953 in Parow, Cape Town. He was the eldest of four children. He has two sisters, Renda and Henriette, and a brother Johan. The family moved to Worcester in 1959 and Leo completed his matric at Worcester Boys High.
From a young age, Leo was very interested in photography. His father built him a darkroom when he was in high school and he loved taking photos on the sports field instead of taking part in the sport.
After school, Leo joined the South African Airforce. He was commissioned as an officer, then a navigator at 35 Squadron Shackletons at Ysterplaat. He then worked at DF Malan Airport and went on to become an instructor at the Nav School at Langebaan.
Leo met Johlene Pocock in Cape Town and they were married in 1977. They have a daughter, Adele and a son, Francois. In 1985 Leo was transferred to Pretoria where he was at the Air Force Headquarters.
Leo took early retirement from the Air Force and worked at various companies such as Infoplan, IBM, Denel, and 43 Air School at Port Alfred.
Leo was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and had to resign from the Air School. He moved back to Pretoria where he courageously underwent surgery and chemotherapy. He never complained but simply did what he needed to do. When he was strong again, he got more involved in various photographic societies and enjoyed his photographic passion while going on organised trips such as Voetspore.
In 2021 Leo found out that the cancer had returned. It was a very tough journey until the end but he was inspiring and very brave.
Leo will be lovingly remembered and cherished by so many people. He leaves behind his two sisters, brother, son, daughter, 5 grandchildren and many caring friends.
